Description

SS 81 SE CRUWYS MORCHARD PENNYMOOR
2/91 The Cruwys Arms
-
II
Public House. Circa mid C17, C20 alterations and renovations. Whitewashed and
rendered, probably stone rubble; slate roof, gabled at ends; back to back axial
stacks with adjoining brick shafts C19 or C20 right end stack with brick shaft.
An unusual C17 plan for the region: instead of the more common 3 room and through
passage arrangement the Cruwys Arms has a 3 room and lobby entrance plan. The lower
end (left hand) room and hall (middle room) stacks are back to back and the front
door opens into a lobby facing the stacks. The lower end fireplace is rather small
for a kitchen but a bread oven indicates that it has served this purpose at some
period. The narrow inner room was originally unheated but has had an end stack
added. The narrow rear addition to the single depth main range is more problematical
: a chamfered beam on the line of the rear wall at the right end suggests the
possibility of a C17 or C18 rear addition (now used as the bar) but the beam is wider
than the inner (right hand) room.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with regular fenestration. Wide gabled porch
to left of centre with a slate roof, front door into lobby between left and centre
rooms; C20 small pane timber casements.
Interior : The hall has an open fireplace with stone rubble jambs and a chamfered
stopped lintel. A chamfered cross beam with step stops (joists renewed) supports the
first floor: The plank and muntin oak screen between hall and inner room has an
ovolo-moulded head beam and ovolo-moulded muntins with scroll stops at the level of
the former hall bench. The head beam is complete but some of the planks and muntins
have been removed. The small lower end room has an open fireplace with a chamfered
stopped lintel, stone rubble jambs and a bread oven. The first floor is supported on
a deeply chamfered step-stopped crossbeam and half beam. First floor and roofspace
not inspected but may be of interest.
A C17 house with an unusual plan form in an important position on a corner site in
the village centre. The building is set back from the road with an area of pitched
stones in front of it.
