Tower House

GV II

House. 1827-33, probably designed by PF Robinson and built by
William Paterson for the fourth Duke of Newcastle. Altered
c1860, by TC Hine, raised and altered c1880 by Watson
Fothergill. Red brick, mainly rendered, with rock-faced ashlar
basement and timber-framed attic with brick nogging.
Terracotta dressings and slate roofs. 2 coped side wall
stacks, rendered.
String courses, ground floor and first floor terracotta
friezes, cornice and coped parapet. 3 storeys plus basement
and attics; 3 window range. Projecting central tower porch,
square, with pyramidal roof and finial. Ground floor has 2
round-headed sashes with a central shaft, carrying a corbel.
Above, a canted stone bay window, hipped, with 3 sashes. Above
again, a smaller window, 3-lights with round-arched plain
sashes. Attic has a small plain sash to each return. Basement
has 2 small windows and side door. To left, a balustrade wall
with ramped coping and square end pier with cornice. Porch
left return has stone steps to a round-arched side doorway
with double shafts and 4-panel door with lattice overlight.
Flanking the porch, large basement windows, that to left with
glazing bars. Above, single glazing bar sashes, and above
again, smaller glazing bar sashes.
