Church institute, now university premises. Late C19. Coursed squared gritstone, ashlar details, slate roof. Possibly by Richard Adams and John Kelly. A rectangular block with 2-storey, 3-bay gable front to Cavendish Road, extending 10 bays eastwards on a sloping site: 4 storeys at E end. Gothic Revival style. Board doors with cast-iron scrolled hinges in ashlar porch with chamfered arch, attached columns. 3-light window and niches above, rose window in gable. Right return: shouldered arch to entrance porch right, projecting gabled wings centre and left, 2- and 3-light windows, some with transoms, plate tracery to upper floor of centre wing. Chimneys reduced in height. INTERIOR: not inspected. Built as Emanuel Church Institute, possibly by Richard Adams and John Kelly who designed the Emmanuel Church to north.
