House, now part of department store. Mid C18, with later
alteration and C20 shopfront. Rendered brick, colour-washed,
with timber shopfront and eaves cornice, and slate roof.
EXTERIOR: 3-storey 3-window front. Shopfront incorporates
6-panel passage door at left end. Windows are unequal 15-pane
sashes on first floor, and unequal 9-pane sashes on second
floor, all in moulded surrounds with narrow sills. Bold
modillion eaves cornice with fluted bowl rainwater head at
left end.
INTERIOR: not accessible. RCHM record an open string staircase
with turned balusters, and top flight with re-used balusters
c1700; first floor room with fluted architraves and angle
roundels; on second floor, a moulded stone fireplace surround.
This house was incorporated into the Golden Lyon Inn (No.5 St
Sampson's Square, qv).
