House, now offices and shop. C16. Timber-frame and ashlared
render with gabled plain tile roof hipping to taller rear
block at southern end.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 4-window range; and now separated with a
number of small units of accommodation. 1st floor has 3
windows with 16-pane sashes and one window with 8-pane narrow
sash with moulded surround. The ground floor of Spindles has 3
slightly bowed C20 shop-type windows with bulls-eye glass and
C20 small-pane door. The adjoining part has a C20 shop front
with small panes and canted recessed entrances with a pair of
C20 doors, one leading to the upper floor. Central ridgeline
stack and stack on rear wall.
INTERIOR: former timber-framed house of mid/late C16 with 4
floored bays, the centre 2 forming hall and upper chamber. The
posts are jowled and central spine beam rests on top of
parlour partition. The partitions of parlour and solar have
curved wall bracing of 'Colchester' type between studs and
original door openings, now infilled. Braces are pegged rather
than nailed to studs. 2 original window openings are visible
and the roof is of queen-post type formerly with curved wind
bracing to purlins.
A 1st-floor room of Spindles has much reused C17 panelling on
door and partition. A staircase at south end is of early C19
with stick balusters, column newels and its side walls are of
painted C17 panelling and on an upper level, of C18
raised-and-fielded panelling. The rear part of Wash Vac
Services premises (former service end) has early C19
semicircular-arched recess on pilasters with reeded surround
and cast-iron decorative column.
