GV II

Terrace of three houses stepped downhill from No.37 to the
left. Mid C19. Painted stucco, slate roofs with rendered
stacks to the right of each house, that to No.39 has a moulded
cornice. Double-depth plans with rear wings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with basements; each house is 2-window
range with a tripartite window to the ground-floor right and a
C20 door to the left. Moulded architraves; first-floor sill
band which continues to the returns; bracketed sills to
2/2-pane sash windows with horns and horizontal glazing bars.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: each house has a rendered wall attached
to the party wall extending forward to a pair of gate piers
approx 1.5m high with painted pyramidal caps. That to No.37 is
plain, Nos 38 and 39 have rock stone coping. C20 front walls.
Devon Square was the centre of the development carried out for
the Courtenays c1840-60 to the designs of JW Rowell.
A similar but more modest design than Nos 1-8 (cons) (qv).
