House; now sub-divided into house and residential home. c1830 with later alterations and extensions including conservatory; subdivided c1930 and altered and extended further in late C20. MATERIALS: white brick in Flemish bond at front and left return, the rear in random bond; rear basement of pink-cream brick in English garden wall bond; shallow pitched hipped roof of slate with wide eaves; brick stacks. No.165A has gabled and bargeboarded dormer with 2x2-pane window in attic right return; at rear, flat-roofed slated box dormer with renewed 4-pane top hung lights. EXTERIOR: original 3-bay front of 2 storeys and basement to No.153A; 2-storey 2-bay extension to right forms front to No.165A, with C20 extension set back to right. No.153A has Tuscan porch of paired columns and entablature: beneath are double doors of raised panels with semicircular fanlight in keyed moulded round arch on plain responds flanked by paired antae with moulded imposts. To left is a window of 3 grouped 1-pane sashes with cambered heads, to right an unequal 15-pane sash window. On the first floor are three 12-pane sash windows with louvred shutters and inserted small 1-pane sash to left of centre window. Left return: ground floor obscured by conservatory with lean-to roof: on the first floor are two 12-pane sash windows. Entrance to No.165A is glazed and panelled door beneath flat porch on columns in re-entrant between right return and further extension to right. Ground floor window is of 3 grouped 1-pane sashes with cambered heads and small 1-pane sash to right. On the first floor there is a tripartite window with narrow 1-pane ashes and a single 1-pane sash to right. Right return: over porch is 4-pane sash window with flat brick arch. All windows to front and left return have channelled segmental arches or wedge lintels with moulded keyblocks and painted stone sills. Rear: 2 storeys, 5 bays, with basement to No.153A, attic to No.165A. Centre bay is canted and has basement window of tall 8-pane sashes on each side of 20-pane sash: the ground floor window is a C20 replacement, the first floor a 12-pane sash. To right of centre bay, the basement door is of 6 incised panels with divided overlight, and further right are board garage doors. On the upper floors, a tall radial-glazed staircase window with round brick arch and small-pane glazing over a small margin-glazed 1-pane sash in segmental brick arch to right of centre. At far right end, ground floor window is

unequal 15-pane sash, the first floor one a 36-pane sash. To left of centre bay, No.165A has two 12-pane sash windows on ground floor; on first floor one 1-pane sash to left, one 4-pane sash to right. Except where indicated otherwise, all rear openings have flat brick arches and windows have painted stone sills. To right of the tall staircase window, the yard bell survives. INTERIORS: not inspected. RCHM record that while the original staircase has been removed, many original doorcases and fireplaces survive.
