Hydraulic engine house and tower. 1868. By J.B. Hartley.
Brick with rock-faced stone dressings. 3 storeys, 7 bays;
1st 2 bays lower, mostly rebuilt after bomb damage. Tower
to rear of right return. Machicolated embattled parapet has
alternating large and small embrasures; quoins. Ground
floor has lancets to 1st 2 bays, other bays have paired
round-headed windows with pointed stone heads. Round-headed
window with pointed stone arch heads. 1st floor has round-
headed window to last 5 bays, with paired round-headed
lights below tympana pierced with roundels. 2nd floor has
paired window with shouldered lintels. Entrance to 3rd bay
has round arch with pointed stone arch head and original
heavily framed paired doors. Right return has entrance and
3-light 1st floor window. Canted connecting block to
projecting stone tower, which is weathered at 2nd floor
level with higher angle buttresses. Balconies with round-
headed entrances and clock faces above, to front and rear.
Machicolations and top stage with square openings and
embattled parapet with notched merlons. Left return of 4
bays with projecting parapet and paired windows and 2
entrances; rear similar.
