2.
Late C16 or very early C17 farmhouse on L plan with a 2 bay hall range of 2 storeys and a
2 storey west cross wing possibly of slightly later build. Originally of entirely timber
framed construction with wattle and daub infill, the hall range was rebuilt in brick in the
late C18 on early C19 and brick nogging inserted in most of the block frame of the west wing
and rendered over. Plain clay tile gable end roofs. Massive sandstone stack with brick
shaft at junction of ridge of the hall range with the wing. The front door is aligned with
the stack on the north elevation. Brick chimney stack to south east gable end. C19 two light
wood casement windows. Inside the hall range the former hall or kitchen has a wide fireplace
with chamfered lintel on simple scroll moulded stops. Main beams and joists have plain
chamfers. In the fireplace is a small salt cupboard with original hinges and simple scratched
ornament . The scullery has plain chamfered beams and formerly had open fireplace. in the
west wing the two ground floor rooms were probably parlours, ogee moulded chamfers with
draw stops to main beams. In the north east corner of the south west wing is an anglo stone
fireplace with moulded 5 centred arch and ogee moulded lintel. Similar lintels in north
west ground and 1st floor rooms probably belonged to similar formerly open fireplaces. This
wing has a dog leg staircase with oak treads and risers of mid C17 date, the upper flight
retaining shaped balusters, square moulded newel posts with ball finals and handrail.
The roof trusses of the wing have cambered tie beams with straight struts.
