Drinking Well at Devonshire Royal
Hospital

Devonshire Hospital Drinking Well and Pump Room. 1882,
renovated c1990. Tooled dressed gritstone and ashlar with
ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs with square louvred
vents to ridge.
EXTERIOR: single storey. Plinth, flush ashlar quoins. Single
bay south front has round headed doorway with 6-panel double
doors and large fanlight with glazing bars and moulded inner
arch. Outer arch linked by impost band with inscription to
arch which reads, ST ANN'S WELL WATER PUMP ROOM/ FOR
DEVONSHIRE HOSPITAL PATIENTS ONLY, all under open pedimented
gable.
West front has slightly projecting, off-centre, single bay
with round headed windows in inner arch linked to round headed
outer arch by impost band with inscription which reads,
DEVONSHIRE HOSPITAL (over) DRINKING WELL AD 1882, all under
open pedimented gable. Either side single 12-pane glazing bar
windows, set back to left a further smaller glazing bar
window.
INTERIOR: not inspected but reputed to contain a pump that
feeds the Devonshire Royal Hospital (qv).
