Description

SD 61 NE TURTON LONGWORTH ROAD NORTH

6/131 Higher Whitaker Farmhouse
-
- II

Farmhouse, probably late C17 or early C18, subsequently altered
and enlarged, now house. Coursed sandstone rubble with quoins to
the original portion, slate roof with a chimney on the ridge and
another at the right gable. Originally 2 bays with end baffle entry,
3rd bay added to the right end, cottage or stable at left end (linked
to other farm buildings at right angles, which are not included).
Two storeys; present entrance in single-storey gabled porch to front of
3rd bay (which has one window each floor), but jambstones of old
doorway are visible at the right end of the 2nd bay; to the left are
2 windows on each floor, all originally 3 lights with chamfered flush
mullions but now casements. Present ridge chimney is at the junction
of these 2 bays. Rear has lean-to outshut to 2nd bay. Interior altered.
(An owl hole visible on the now covered gable of the barn appears to be
lettered "J S 16??").
