CROWN STEPS (East Side) Bank Cottage (to TQ 2550 SW 12/174 of No 4 High Street) The description should be amended to read

House. C17, probably 1st half, with later alterations and major early - C20 alterations when the building was divided into 2 cottages. Timber frame with brick infill and cladding whitewashed; plain tile roof. Originally single-storey with attic, 3 framed bays. South front: through-passage on left has exposed wall post on left and stud above; part-glazed door to its right and another, part-glazed, at right end, both under cambered brick arches. On the inside of each door a tall, bricked-up, window opening with flat brick arch and small casement window inserted; a 3rd casement window on right of central bay. Ends of 2 iron tie bars. Eaves band. Two flat-roofed dormers to left and a third to right, all with casements, tile-hung cheeks and lead roofs. Central chimney stack. Rear: mostly brick, but timbering is exposed at either end comprising corner posts, mid rail and vertical studs. Later external stack to left of passage. Left and right returns: weather- boarded; window in left gable. Timbering visible in the through-passage gable wall includes cill plate, mid-rail, posts and studs; the pavement is of coarsely squared sets. Interior: in right room on ground floor rear corner post visible under stairs. 1st floor: wall posts, studs and wall plates visible; two principal rafter trusses, the time beams cut out; some wide floor boards. Unoccupied at time of survey.
