NZ 05 SE CONSETT THE TERRACE (East side) Shotley Bridge 5/87 (inset) Shotley House, Shotley House Cottage and Peile House GV II House, now 3 separate houses. Built as Shotley House circa 1860 for J. Priestman. Pecked, margined sandstone ashlar with plinth and quoins; Welsh slate roof with ashlar and yellow brick chimneys. E-plan. Front range and long F-plan rear range. Italianate style. Front range: 2 storeys, 3 bays. 6 wide steps up to half-glazed door and side lights flanked by square Tuscan columns and pilasters, under overlights and entablature with prominent cornice; etched glass in principal lights. Sill band to 4-pane sash in plain stone surround above, recessed under corbel table linking outer bays. Quoined outer bays have similar sashes in 2-storey canted bays. Continuous first-floor-level band and top entablature with paired curved stone brackets under wide eaves. Low-pitched hipped roof has shallow hips over canted bays; 2 cruciform brick chimneys on ashlar plinths; rear corniced ashlar chimneys on other ranges. Left return has 2 bays of front range, that to right with square projecting bay, and a fern-house grotto covering the left bay, with conservatory removed; plainer 2-storey, set-back bay with left quoins; plain 2-storey, 4-bay rear wing set back. Right return has projecting central wing, now Shotley House Cottage; courtyard behind with 2 ranges of servants' quarters and coach houses, now Peile House. Rear range has pebble-dashed extended upper storey. Interior of Shotley House: Imperial stair in central hall has wreaths and curtails; 6-panel doors in architraves throughout; moulded panelled internal shutters; some original marble chimneypieces; rich stucco decoration to ceiling roses and cornices in late C18 style.
