Bridge tollhouse. 1792, by John Treacher. Painted brick. Plain clay tile roofwith gabled ends.
Brick gable-end stacks. PLAN: Small rectangular plan house with entrance at north gable-end
and porch on east side facing bridge carriageway. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Nearly symmetrical
east front. 2 and three-light casements with leaded panes. central brick gabled porch with
doorwayon the right-hand return. Right-hand [north] gable-end has central round-headed
doorway with semi-circular fanlight, large imposts and keystone supporting pedimental hood;
above the doorway diaper pattern brickwork. Casement windows at rear and on south gable-
end. INTERIOR appears to have largely C20 joinery.Note: The first bridge was buiult in
timber in 1792, by Act of Parliament, to the designs of John Treacher, surveyor to the Thames
Commissioners. It was rebuilt in wood in 1852. The present Whitchurch Bridge [qv] is a 1902
steel structure.
