Monument to Doris in Main Yard,
Childwick Bury Stud

GV II

Horse burial monument in the Main Yard of Childwick Bury Stud
commemorating the stud's important thoroughbred brood mare,
Doris. Panel at base of memorial slab inscribed: Erected by
J.B.Joel 1917.
Portland stone ashlar. In an austere classical style. A
circular dressed stone paved platform raised on a single step,
and at the far side of the platform a vertical memorial slab
flanked by, low, curved, symmetrical wing walls, each wing
wall supporting a quadrant bracket against the sides of the
slab; from an ear at the top of each bracket a carved foliage
drop on the side of the bracket; the slab has a crowning
entablature with pulvinated frieze and, in the centre of the
frieze, a block inscribed in bronze numerals with the date
1917; at the base of the slab the inscription, as above,
within a horozontal, rectangular panel with moulded frame
carved with laural leaves, and above on the slab a tall,
vertical, fielded panel; within the panel at the top an
unsigned, circular, bronze or beaten copper bas-relief of the
mare; below in bronze letters the inscription: DORIS by Loved
One - Lauretta foaled 1896 died 1917 among her many foals were
the winners Little Dolly , Lady Portland , Selsey Bill . White
Star . Radiant . Bright . Silver Star. Princess Dorrie winner
of the One Thousand & Oaks and Sunstar winner of the Two
Thousand & Derby 1911.
