House, now dwelling, part of Oxfordshire County Museum and post office. Late
C16/early C17. Coursed limestone rubble; double-gabled M-shaped stone slate
roof; brick right end and ridge stacks, and left end stack of stone finished in
brick. Double-depth plan. 2 storeys and attic; 5-window range. 3-window range to
right: wrought-iron brackets support flat hood above C20 door; mid C19 shop
fronts have 4-light windows with glazing bars and sunk spandrels to arched
heads; flat stone arches over horned and unhorned 8-pane sashes. To left, is
similar bracketed hood and timber lintel over C18 six-panelled door; C17
two-storey square bay window has 8-pane sashes, with thick glazing bars on
ground floor. Left bay has mid C19 canted bay windows with six-pane sashes
framed by pilasters and moulded cornice. Three gabled roof dormers with 2-light
latticed and leaded windows. Three C17 two-storey rear wings: wing to right has
finely-carved timber lintels over 2-light leaded casement and 3-light
wood-mullioned window, and later C17 bay to rear with stop-chamfered timber
lintel over 4-light leaded casement. C20 extension to rear left. Interior;
stop-chamfered beams. No.8 to left has stop-chamfered and cased beams and some
early C17 panelling with fluted frieze in room to right; late C18 panelled door
with brass Dutch-drop handle; early C19 moulded plaster cornice. Noted as having
C17 staircases with turned balusters to the rear of Nos.2-6. Called "newly
built" in 1608.
