II

Estate lodge. Dated 1853. Coursed limestone rubble with stone
dressings. Plain tile roof with gable ends with shaped bargeboards
and crested ridge tiles. Stone gable end and lateral stacks with
tall moulded and polygonal shafts. Plan: Central cross-wing; single
storey wing on right with verandah porch on front and outshut on left
side of cross-wing. Tudor Gothic style. Exterior: 1 storey and
attic gabled cross-wing with narrow canted stone bay window on ground
floor, its moulded stone canopy rising between 2 shouldered head
lancets on first floor. Single storey wing on right, its roof
carried down at front over verandah porch with chamfered 4-canted
arch doorway on side of cross-wing. Lean-to outshut on left with
projecting stone stack coat of arms and date 1853. Rear, south east,
elevation has 2-light windows in cross-wing, ground floor with
shouldered arch heads, 2-light window in single storey wing on left
and shouldered arch head doorway in lean-to outshut on right with
plank door and wrought-iron hinges. All metal casement windows with
glazing bars. Interior not inspected. It has been suggested that
Lower Lodge may have been designed by Lewis Vulliamy, who designed
the nearby Westonbirt House (qv) and its estate houses.
