Sysonby Lodge

Early C19. Said to have been built, as a hunting lodge, by the Earl of Plymouth, on the site of a late C18 cottage. Originally known as Plymouth Lodge. Main or western facade rendered over brickwork, plinth, and band at first floor. Moulded cornice. End pilasters and pilasters dividing window bays. Slate roof.
Five windows, the centre three bays of three storeys (the third added). Eaves band. Outer bays have parapet. North side has square bay window with a three- light sash and one side light. Rest are sashes with boxed frames and glazing bars. Centre advanced door with balcony above and Regency doorcase with fanlight and side lights, doors replaced. Balustrade above. Reeded side panels and stone steps.
Interior has some six-panelled doors and an early C19 fireplace on ground floor with broken pediment, dentil cornice and mirror with arch and side pilasters. Arch across this room. Some panelling brought from elsewhere, including some pieces with low relief carving possibly of C17 date.
The Lodge stands on a hill above fields and a brook and occupies a prominent position. Sir Winston Churchill, Lord Beatty and the American Vanderbilts hunted from here.
