Schoolroom, now parish room. Probably C16 (but see History, below). Coursed
squared sandstone, stone slate roof. Rectangular single-cell plan. Single
storey; symmetrical 2-bay south front has moulded Tudor-arched doorway in the
centre, board door with ornamental strap hinges; 2 buttresses flanking the
doorway, and in each bay a recessed mullioned window of 5 Tudor-arched lights
with hollow spandrels, and hoodmould. External chimney stack at left gable,
embraced by low added outbuilding. Rear wall has 2 inserted 3-light casement
windows.
Interior: altered, roof concealed by ceiling.
History: Prudence, wife of Richard Berrie and neice of Sir Richard Gargrave
of Kinsley, endowed school in mid C17; mentioned in l660 as free school for
manor of Havercroft. Reference: Kate Taylor Wakefield District Heritage,
(Wakefield, 1976) Vol II p.55.
