The Woodhouse

GV II*

House. C15, restored 1991. Timber-framed; rear wing partly
rebuilt in limestone rubble in late C16/early C17;
steep-pitched double-Roman tile roof with brick stacks.
PLAN: L-shaped C15 plan, with hall to front and probable
parlour wing to rear; floor inserted to hall in late C16/early
C17, when stacks inserted to rear of hall and rear wing; C18
stack to front right.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 3-window range. Forward frames to
early/mid C18 sash windows with thick glazing bars, 9/9 panes
to the 1st floor and 3 of 6/6 panes to the ground floor which
are paired to the centre, one to the right. C19 or C20
6-panelled door to the right. Morticing to studs shows that
there were originally 2 6-light windows with wooden tracery;
front was originally jettied.
Rear wing includes late C16/early C17 stone-mullioned
ovolo-moulded windows and C19 stone and brick extension to
rear.
INTERIOR: access not possible on survey but known to include
hall roof with 2 tiers of butt purlins and chamfered
windbraces, with evidence of smoke blackening to north (left)
bay; attached polygonal shaft to scissor-braced truss, flanked
by collar trusses and plain crown-post to north; mortices for
downswinging braces. Rear wing has 4 similar scissor trusses.
Late C16/early C17 1st-floor front fireplace with chamfered
wood bressumer and chamfered stone jambs; plank and muntin
partition of same date to ground floor.
Hall probably originally extended further to north (left).
