GV II

House, now a shop and offices. Early C18, front block rebuilt
early/mid C19. Limestone ashlar, hipped slate roof with tall
brick stacks to right corner and left return. Double-depth
plan with older rear wings, formerly separate cottages.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 2-window range. 3/6-pane sash windows to
the 2nd floor, 6/6-pane sashes to the 1st floor and later C19
projecting shop window of 3 plate-glass panes to the right of
the ground floor; to the left steps lead up to a
semicircular-arched roll-edged doorway and mid C19 door with
2 bolection-moulded panels to the base and C20 glazing above;
plain fanlight. Cornice and blocking course returned to the
right, platbands between floors.
Early C18 rear wing has 2-window front to churchyard including
9/9-pane sashes with thick glazing bars, hoodmould over
3-light stone-mullioned window and mid C20 doorway with
bracketed hood.
INTERIOR: arched cellars extend under all 3 buildings and
under the road. The rear wing is altered. 2 chamfered beams
and 4-leaf panelled shutters with wrought-iron arched fixing
bar, catch and H-hinges remain.
HISTORY: this was The King's Head Public House in the late C18
and early C19. The 3 cottages to the rear were acquired by the
King's Head before 1784.
