Stables and coach houses of country house. 1826-33, by Edward Blore, for Sir George Philips. Red brick in Flemish garden wall bond and freestone dressings. Welsh slate roofs, the east range roof replaced with plain tiles. PLAN: Built around a rectangular courtyard; Tudor style.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey east front of 1:3:1:3:1 bays; central gabled tower with octagonal turrets with tall pinnacles with stone finials and 4-centred arch carriageway flanked by buttresses and with oriel above, over which is a roundel in the gable; to left and right moulded stone eaves cornice broken by three gabled ashlar oriels with spike finials; flanking gable-ends of north and south ranges break forward and have moulded stone kneelers and finials, their returns have similar gables superimposed on the ends of the ranges; single-storey north, south and west ranges with stone mullion windows and gable ends with stone kneelers and finials. The elevations facing the courtyard inside have similar stone mullion windows with iron frames, stable doorways with plank doors and overlights and wide 4-centred arches, on the west side forming arcades. The east range has plinth with chamfered stone weathering, INTERIOR: The stables have cast-iron columns supporting plastered jack-arches. Kitchen with boiler beside fireplace.
