Open-sided barn at Tongswood Farm
GV II
Open-sided barn, probably hay barn for making silage. Late C19, part of Tongswood Farm, a model farm built for William Gunther who raised prime bulls for export to Argentina. Rectangular structure with base of red brick in Flemish bond and superstructure of timberframing with pattern of diagonal braces and half-hipped tiled roof. It is built into the side of a hill and has two small wooden doors at the top and a large entrance at the bottom. The grass would be brought in at the lower end and shovelled out at the upper end when well rotted and the open sides were designed to let out the resultant gases. This building played a major part in the raising of the bulls.
