Houses, now shop and storage. Early to mid C19 facades, with
earlier C17 timber-framed structure within, comprehensively
reconstructed 1983-4, with facade to Bull Plain largely
rebuilt. Yellow stock brick, laid to Flemish bond, below
hipped Welsh slated roof.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys. 2 bay facades to Salisbury Square, and
Bull Plain, with chamfered corners. First floor to Salisbury
Square has single recessed 12-pane sash window left centre,
and single triple sash, 4:12:4 panes at right, both under
rubbed brick flat arches. Corner to left with single 12-pane
and 6-pane sash first and second floors. The return elevation
to Bull Plain has two 16-pane sashes, with blank panel below
rubbed brick flat arches. Second floor with 2 squat 8-pane
sashes. Ground floor has late C20 shopfront across full width
of Salisbury Square elevation, with return along Bull Plain,
display windows in C20 door openings framing C20 shopfront.
Simplified pilasters with console brackets across fascia,
display windows divided by slender mullions, with arcaded
heads to main run, panelled timber stallrisers, and C20 twin
leaf half-glazed doors. The two mid/late C19 shopfronts and
half-glazed door noted in 1983 are no longer extant.
INTERIOR: remodelled 1983-4, staircase, rear windows, first
floor plaster ceiling noted in July 1983 are no longer extant,
and the front shop space is now 2 storeys high. The open
timber truss and structure noted in 1983 is now exposed and
has been partly reset. The lower ground floor, 3 steps down
from main level, occupies the former No.2 Bull Plain in situ
and reinforced by C20 propped beams, with a longitudinal
section chamfered with a tongue stop. The partition at
first-floor level has reset studwork and late C20 bracing,
with C17 primary bracing along the return wall to Bull Plain.
At secondfloor level the C17 rafters and purlin support noted
in 1983 are still extant, with some gable studwork in the
partition between the former No.2 Bull Plain and No.1
Salisbury Square. In the party wall to No.4 Bull Plain (not
included) pegged studwork, rafters and a collar are exposed.
the remainder of the second floor is completely of late C20
date.
This building has been comprehensively reconstructed since the
list description was revised in 1983, and remains of special
interest because of its C17 timber framing, albeit much
modified and reset, and its position with other buildings on
the street frontage.
