The Liberty of Brickendon Poor House, now converted to 4
cottages. c1820, converted mid-late C19 by S Adams (Bennett,
p.26). Yellow brick in Flemish Bond, left return rendered;
Welsh slate roof.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic. 4 bays (3 at rear). 2-light
small-pane metal casement windows, or replacement 12-pane or
16-pane sashes, all in reveals with projecting sills and
gauged flat brick arches. Road elevation: bay 3 has later C19
6-panel door (top 2 panels glazed) in former window opening;
metal casements to left bay. Otherwise sashes, those to right
bay unhorned. 1st-floor windows of 3 right bays have raised
heads, segmental-arched. Boxed eaves. Two stacks to each gable
and one to rear, at bay 2. Right return, original entrance
elevation, has central 4-panel door (top 2 panels glazed)
below fanlight with radial glazing bars in stepped
round-arched surround; a metal casement window to first floor
and attic, in line; stepped eaves.
Attached on right a single-storey outhouse having board door
and 2-light 6-pane window to left return; board door to right
return; pantile roof; and gable stack.
Left return as right return, but the doorway a later C19
insertion (with late C20 door).
Rear has 2 original doorways with cambered arches, that on
left with board door, that on right converted to window and
another door inserted in former window opening between them; 2
other original window openings, and 3 above.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
