Inn, and hotel, now shop with student residence above. Rebuilt
1890 on site of the historic 'Talbot Inn', Architect H
Johnson. Yellow-grey brick with stone dressings and
first-floor front windows, Welsh slated roof.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, first floor with broad segmental arch
with moulded extrados and console keyblock framing recessed
and projecting canted mullion and transom windows, side lights
with architrave surrounds, panel above centre, leaded upper
lights, cornice at second-floor sill level, balcony front
below first-floor sills, with stone turned balusters and
moulded top rail; second floor with 2 coupled arched sash
windows separated by antae, with flanking pilasters with
semicircular arches with dripmoulds, outer flanking pilasters,
panelled fascia, with scrolled pediment parapet above. Ground
floor has stone pilasters with carved brackets carrying first
floor above. Recessed doors and windows, modified on left to
lead into alleyway alongside building, moulded window
surrounds and panelled stallrisers.
INTERIOR: bar fittings removed from ground floor in conversion
to shop, cased beams with panelled covers remain in ceilings.
Upper floors converted to student residence 1992, late C19
staircase with Japanese style balusters, open string and
turned newels with squat column and pawn finial. Access to
upper floors now through Dimsdale House adjoining (qv).
The site was part of the block rebuilt in 1890 by Poors
Charity for the new Post Office, Nos 84 & 86 Fore Street
adjoining to east (qv).
