Pair of houses. Late C18 with earlier origins. Squared, coursed limestone rubble and dressings, with ashlar gable stacks and stone slate double-pile roof. Double-depth plan with rear services. 2 storeys, basement and attic; 2:1-window range. Quoins, coped gables and flush dressed surrounds to openings, No.53 has a left-hand doorway and 4-panel door, No.55 is symmetrical with a central round-arched doorway, fanlight and 6-panel door; 6/6-pane sashes, with eaves dormers with segmental heads and top-hung casements. Left-hand return has a C20 timber canted bay; C19 and C20 rear extensions. INTERIOR: details of No.53 include a central stair hall with stick balusters and column newels, door through thick rear wall to kitchen extension. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached iron railings, gate and dwarf wall to front raised pavement, which has a left-hand round-arched basement doorway at road level to a similar vaulted passage.
