Terrace of houses, part now a hotel. Laid out from 1841 as the
first part of the Victoria Building Company's estate under the
overall direction of Thomas Marsh Nelson. No.5 is by John
Brown, 1850. Stuccoed brick. Slate roofs. 4 storeys on
basement. Carlton Hotel on corner site returning into Albert
Square. The terrace has a rusticated ground floor with
entrance porches on unfluted columns. East-facing elements are
symmetrical except that No.4 has a C20 attic storey.
Rusticated quoins. Cast-iron balcony railings to first floor.
6/6 sashes and French doors to first-floor balcony.
First-floor windows with pediments, segmental to No.5. No.5
has 3 bays, 2 canted window bays to ground floor and a
panelled parapet. Nos 2 & 8 have Venetian windows to the first
floors. Gabled and hipped roofs with transverse stacks.
INTERIORS: Carlton Hotel extends through Nos 1-5. Plain
interiors altered C20. Staircase in an open well rising to an
oval dome: 2 turned balusters per tread.
