House, originally a pair. c1860. By Samuel Pountney Smith.
Ashlar faced, brick to rear, with slate mansard roof. French
Baroque style. 2 storeys with attics, 2-window range, designed
to read as a single house. Side entrances in architraves with
entablatures carried on console brackets. Squared bay windows
with casements, and cast-iron balustrading above. Sash windows
above and 2 dormers in roof. Shallow canted bay windows in
rear elevation, and stair windows with stained glass
incorporating medieval fragments.
INTERIOR: simple decorative scheme, with panelled arched
recesses in front rooms, and plaster cornices.
The houses were built as speculations by Pountney Smith, who
acquired the property c1860. They form a pair with Kinnersley
House (qv).
