Chest tomb. Circa 1835. Stone, partly rendered. Large rectangular chest with moulded base and lid, the lid with weathered top. Each end has double-recessed 4-centred rusticated arch panel containing patee fitched cross and date. The sides have recessed inscription plaques and flanking corner piers with double recessed rusticated round-headed niche containing upturned torch. The chest stands on large ashlar plinth with cast-iron area railings of intersecting pattern with cresting and polygonal corner standards.
William Cobbett, essayist, politician and agriculturalist, was born 1762 in Farnham, he was the son of a labourer, and died at Normandy Farm, near Guildford in 1835.
