Mid C19. Possibly recasing of earlier house. 4 storeys stucco, cornice and
parapet. Curved round corner site. Full height canted stucco bays with Corinthian
colonettes dividing lights, string courses carried across. Composite columned
entrance. Interior has very fine mid C19 staircase hall rising full height of
building. It consists of a rectangular well, of which the ground floor is architecturally
a basement with solid walls plain palisters and cornice whole the 1st 2 floors
have lofty Corinthian columns grouped at the corners of the stair well. (One
column is in fact a pier, and another a pilaster attached to a pier). The columns
support a rich entablature. Above the entablature is a single attic storey with
panelled piers. Cornice over and top light. The staircase, of cast iron, starts
as a single flight facing the front door, and branches out in freestanding curves
to 1st floor level. There is an iron balustrade to 1st floor gallery level,
and a suspended gallery landing at 2nd floor level with a cast iron balustrade
behind the columns. Top floor with cast iron balustrade between piers. At 1st
floor level there is a staircase of similar character facing the entrance door
rising from the rear of the gallery to the 2nd floor. There are panelled doors
in mounted surrounds at all gallery levels and the features and details in character.
The Terrace Lounge, 1st floor has 2 mid C19 enriched plaster ceilings in a room
in 2 parts divided by a flat arch supported on 2 Corinthian columns. Marble
chimney piece. Remainder of interior altered.
Some of the first films brought to this country and made by Louis Lumiere were
shown here in 1897 and at the former Old Town Hall.
