SS 70 SE SANDFORD LOWER NEWBUILDINGS

2/240 Rowan Tree Cottage

GV II


Cottage; part of former farmhouse. Early-mid C17, extended in C19. Plastered cob
on rubble footings; rubble stacks topped with C19 brick. Gable-ended cottage
facing south-east (away from road). The right (north-east) room was originally the
inner room of a C17 farmhouse which was subdivided and enlarged (to left) in C19.
Axial stack to right room and rear lateral stack to left room. 2 storeys.
Irregular 3-window front of late C19 and C20 casements. Each room has a C20 door
at right side, the right one behind a C20 glass-sided porch. Right room has early-
mid C17 crossbeam with double-ovolo moulding and leaf-decorated step stops; oak
fireplace lintel has rebated ogee moulding and leaf-decorated step stops. Roof
inaccessible but probably replaced in C19. Remainder of original farmhouse
occupied by Lower Shoplands (q.v.).
