STOWE-BY-CHARTLEY HIXON SK 02 NW New Road Farmhouse 1/12 New Road II

Farmhouse C14/15, substantially rebuilt in C17 and with most of walling rebuilt in mid/late C19; mid/late C20 alterations. Guck-framed, with C17 square-panelled framing to cross wing; mid/late C19 brick walling: C20 plain tile roof; brick ridge stacks. Medieval hall house remodelled as C17 T-plan with cross wing to left. One storey and attic; 4-window range. Front to Martins Way has flat arches over C20 windows to ground floor; 2 gabled dormers have late C19 three-light casements. Entrance via lean-to porch to rear. Interior inspection not possible but noted as having 2 pairs of medieval crucks; the northern pair and purlins are smoke-blackened, and end in a collar. Chanfered ceiling beam and joists; 2 open fireplaces; room to south of former hall has cyma-stopped chanfered beam and fireplace bressummer.
