24/60 The Old House

II

House. Late C16 3 bay end chimneystack house with ground floor
underbuilt in C18 and mainly refenestrated in C20. Timber framed
building with exposed curved tension bracing and plastered infill.
Ground floor red brick in English bond. Tiled roof with gable end to
north and external red brick chimneystack and gable to south. West
side retains 1 original diamond mullioned window and 2 other late C20
casements. C20 doors. North ground floor room, formerly Parlour has
spine beam with 1½ chamfer with lambs tongue stop,floor joists with
lambs tongue stops and open fireplace with wooden bressumers. Kitchen
to south has spine beam with 1½ inch chamfer but plain floor joists
and C18 bressumer over fireplace. First floor has jowled corner posts.
Queen post roof and open fireplace to north rooms. Local tradition
considers this to be the remaining part of Court Lodge, the remainder
of which was removed to Groombridge in Kent earlier in the c20 but
this building appears to be a separate self-contained building.
