House. Probably late C17. Regular coursed ironstone rubble. Steeply pitched C20
tile roof. C20 brick ridge stack and stack to right end on stone base. 3-unit
plan. Single storey plus attic. C20 door to right. To right a 3-light wood
mullioned window with ovolo moulded mullions and ovolo moulded lintel. To left
two 2-light and one single light window all with wooden lintels. A 3-light and
two 2-light casements to attic have C20 wooden lintels and wrought iron casement
fasteners. Interior: Staircase has straight flight and quarter turn. Stop
chamfered beams, chamfered bressumer and bread oven in main room, plank doors.
Oriel Cottage is noted as the site of the workhouse which was first mentioned in
1736.
