House, former gate house to Ewood Hall (demolished) and contemporary with the
barns and coach house to Ewood, Midgley Road (q.q.v.), c.1865. Ashlar, slate
roof. 3-bay symmetrical facade; square on plan. Rusticated quoins, eaves band,
moulded gutter brackets supporting moulded cornice. Central bay breaks forward
over doorcase; engaged Corinthian columns support segmental arch, moulding over
spandrels; inner door has segmental arched fanlight with keystone and impost
block; rusticated quoins to 1st floor which has shouldered arched window with
architrave with heraldic shield under sill; cornice returned and broken with
raised pediment on blocking course with oculus above. To either side sashed
windows to each floor with lugged architrave. Left hand return wall has central
2-light similar sashed window to each floor with to either side well dressed
stacks. Rear has 2 tall segmental headed windows separated by trefoil. Right
hand return wall fronts former coach road; 2 bays of similar sashed windows with
portico between with stilted arched doorway with expressed keystone; 2 stacks to
outer bays. Pyramidal roof.
