House. Probably C16, remodelled c1700, extended early C18,
front roof heightened probably mid C19.
Roughcast render on rubble to front; rubble and slatehanging
at rear; brick to left-hand end; rag slate roofs with brick
end stacks except for tall lateral stack at rear right.
U-shaped plan with through passage left of centre, rear wing
on left truncated, other wing early C18.
Two storeys; 3-window range. Mid C19 hornless sashes of
various sizes. C18 six-panel door with fielded panels and
plain overlight.
Rear wing on right has flat arches over original early C18
sashes with thick glazing bars: 4 to rear wall and 1 to 1st
floor of inner wall; mid C19 glazed porch to rear of through
passage; other wing with evidence of old alterations and with
lean-to extensions at rear.
INTERIOR: C16 oak roof structure to front range and to rear
return on left; the 3 bays on left and those of wing with
lapped dovetail joints to collars, altered trusses to right;
original timber-frame construction with cob infill visible to
left of passage and to chamber on left where chamfered feet of
trusses are jointed on to chamfered wall plate. Possibly
original or C17 heavy cross beam to left-hand front room.
Many late C17 or early C18 features including:
bolection-moulded panelling to right-hand front room, with
moulded ceiling cornice and moulded chimney-piece with
pulvinated frieze and moulded architrave; fielded panelling
and dentilled chimney-piece to ground-floor room of right-hand
wing; deeply coved plaster ceiling in space (now sub-divided)
behind left-hand chamber, possibly the c1700 stair hall;
turned balustrades flanking entrance to central chamber; many
2-panel doors and steep oak roof structure to C18 wing with
slightly curved feet to the trusses.
This house retains many interesting structural and
architectural features, the rear elevation is very attractive
and it is part of a very important group of houses.
