Description

OTTERTON FORE STREET (north side),
SY 0885
Otterton
7/156 No. 34 Milson Cottage
GV II
Cottage, once 2 cottages but originally part of a larger house with adjoining No.
32, Santasu Cottage (q.v.). C17 origins, rebuilt in late C18 and C19, modernised
circa 1970. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble stacks topped
with c19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.
Formerly two 1-room plan cottages built end on to Fore Street and facing Box Cottage
(q.v.) to west-south-west, say west. The larger of the 2 rooms is that nearest the
street on the right (south). It has a projecting rear lateral stack. The left
room has a large projecting gable end stack and its front is set back a short
distance from the right room. Although this property appears to occupy the service
end of a C17 3-room-and-through-passage plan house (the rest is now No. 32, Santasu
Cottage adjoining to rear) nothing of this early house appears to survive. Cottage
is 2 storeys.
Irregular 2:1 window front of C20 casements with glazing bars. The first floor
windows are half dormers with the thatch roof lifted over. The present front
doorway is on the left side of the projecting right room. The panelled door is C20
with contemporary gabled and thatch-roofed porch. Roof is gable-ended to left and
half-hipped to right (the street). The street end contains a similar C20 casement
with glazing bars on each floor. To rear (right of the street end) the thatch eaves
are carried down over the shoulders of the stack there.
Interior much-modernised circa 1970. Both fireplaces have been rebuilt and the
only crossbeam (in the main right room) looks like a replacement from this date.
Roof inaccessible.
Milson Cottage is one of a group of attractive listed buildings along Otterton Fore
Street.
