Overseer's Hut with inclines

Overseer's hut. c 1848. Portland stone ashlar, including roof.
A small building set into ground slope to S, and facing N
opposite entry through N boundary wall (qv); a semi-octagonal
front has central C19 plank door to segmental head flanked in
the canted sides by single deep-set casements. Steep pitched
roof is in solid stone overlapping slabs, and over the door is
a small stone gablet projecting from the semi-octagonal
hipped roof. Back is plain, partly into bank. On either side
are approach inclines from the main prison level, in large
Portland stone setts, and with stone gutter sections on N
side. Interior not seen. This was provided for overseeing
activities by prisoners entering and leaving by the doorway
central to the N wall, and it is set on the central axis of
the whole complex aligned on the main gate (qv) to the S.
