School, now offices. 1850. Brandon Hill Grit squared rubble with Pennant bands and limestone dressings, cross axial stacks and decorative tiled cross-gabled roof. Axial single-depth plan. Tudor Gothic Revival style. Single storey and attic; 9-window range. A near-symmetrical block with a large cross gable in the middle and lower ones at each ends and in the returns. A moulded plinth, Pennant bands below cills, heads and relieving arches; moulded eaves with carved rainwater heads, coped gables with kneelers and finials. Doorway in the left side of the main gable with an elliptical arch, chamfered jambs and a label with a battened door; at each end are lean-to porches with Tudor-arched doorways, open to the right end, with side windows with margin lights. Large mullion and transom Tudor-arched window in the main gable has 15 lights and lattice cast-iron panes; above it is a plaque inscribed ST JOHN'S PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS/ MDCCCL, and a small bellcote. Other windows have mullions and metal casements; the side and end gables have 3-light ground-floor and 2-light first-floor windows, and between are 3- and 2-light mullion windows, with labels. The fine roof has a diaper pattern of black tiles with red and brown tiles between. Similar rear elevation has later additions. INTERIOR: few surviving original details. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached front area walls with wrought-iron railings and tall perimeter walls to playground at the rear. A vigorous design with good townscape value.
