House, now hotel. c1800. Converted late C19 by JH Hirst.
Limestone ashlar, roof not visible. Double-depth plan. Late
Georgian style.
4 storeys and basement; 7-window range. A near-symmetrical
front has canted full-height bays, the right-hand one
projecting further than the left, to a cornice and parapet.
Central raised semicircular-arched doorway has a plate-glass
fanlight, and inner C20 half-glazed doors. Horned plate-glass
sashes, with blind boxes to the ground floor, and 3 basement
windows, the outer ones blind. Mid C19 full-width first-floor
tented timber balcony has cast-iron brackets and wrought-iron
railings with lattice sections separated by panels with
anthemia in arched tops, and cobweb spandrels. To the rear a
late C19 long brick extension raised on open arches.
INTERIOR: much altered; rear open dogleg stair with cast-iron
stick balusters and newels, and a good ramped rail with inlaid
strip and star to the bottom wreath.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached walls and capped outer piers,
central double stairs curve in to a flight to the doorway, and
spear-headed wrought-iron railings.
Linked internally with the adjoining house, now hotel annex
(qv). Forms part of a continuous uphill row of houses dating
from c1780-1800 with many variations, the use of tall bay
windows and fine balconies being a particularly distinctive
element.
