Pickering Hall


Former home for orphan girls, now old people's home. 1914. By
John Bilson of Hull. Brick with ashlar dressings and plain
tile roof with 2 side wall and 2 rear wall stacks. Late C17
Domestic Revival style. Plinth and first-floor band. 2
storeys; 11-window range. C-plan. Windows are glazing bar
sashes with slight segmental heads. Central projecting ashlar
entrance bay has an 18-pane sash with an eared and shouldered
surround. To its left, an 18-pane sash, then two 12-pane
sashes. To its right, three 12-pane sashes. Below, a moulded
ashlar doorcase flanked by rusticated pilasters, with a
panelled door. Flanking wings have dentillated open pediments
and two 18-pane sashes on each floor. Returns have 2
through-eaves pedimented dormers.
