Description

TM 0433 STRATFORD ST MARY LOWER STREET (west side) 6/33 Rosebank, Nelsons Cottage - and Side Cottage GV II 3 cottages, probably originally one house. Probable C15 origins with C16-C17 alterations and early C19 front range of Rosebank. Timber-framed, rendered, plain tile roofs. Front range with 2 cross wings projecting at rear, left section of front range rebuilt or refronted early C19. 2 storeys. Rosebank: early C19 front range, 2 bays. 6-panel door with overlight in pilastered doorcase to right. 16-pane renewed sash to left and 12-pane sashes in reveals with sills above. Stack to left gable. Rear range at lower level has steeply-pitched swept roof and saw-tooth stack. Nelsons and Side Cottages: 3-window front with single-storey extension to right with C19 shop window. Central C20 glazed door with jamb lights set in painted brick. 3 and 5-light casements. Coved eaves, swept roof, gableted at right (Side Cottage). Rear cross wing of Rosebank gabled, that of Side Cottage gableted. Large stepped stack, rebuilt in part, rises through catslide roof over later extension of Nelsons. Interior: rear range of Rosebank apparently 2 builds. Frame partly exposed, jowled post with arch brace to tie beam, studded walls. Contains basket-arched fireplace. Nelsons apparently later C16, slightly higher than cross wings as shown by framing members at higher level than those of cross wings exposed to end partition walls. Partition wall with Side Cottage contains section of trefoil door head to ground floor and shows base of post (crown post?) supported by tie beam to 1st floor. Studded walls. Inglenook with chamfered jambs and bressummer to ground floor, basket-arched fireplace above. 3-bay clasped purlin roof. Interior Side Cottage not inspected.
