Description

EAST KNOYLE MILTON ST 83 SE (south side) 8/48 Clouds Estate Office, Holly Cottage, Stable House and Clouds Stables GV II Stables and grooms' accommodation to Clouds House, for Percy Wyndham by Philip Webb. 1880s. Limestone ashlar to ground floor, English bond brick to first, tiled roofs, brick stacks. Extensive two-storey and single-storey ranges around two courtyards. Main courtyard to west flanked on west side by Estate Office, former nags stable with grooms' rooms over, 12-pane sashes and 3-light casements and C20 doors to ground floor, gabled first floor has four 2-light leaded casements, tiled offset between ground and first floors. North side, left return-is entrance to Holly Cottage, formerly head groom's house, with 3-light mullioned casement, planked door and sash. North range, now The Stable House is symmetrical with central 3-storey tower with hipped roof and 2- light leaded casements, either side is 2-storey range with casements and blocked segmental arch on stone imposts, formerly open, the left one with inserted door with reset bay leaf frieze, garage doors to left, the right one with planked doors and casements. South-facing side of north range has four 12-pane sashes to ground floor, 2-light casements to tile-hung first floor, French windows in blocked archways either side with hipped attic dormers, flanking wings have 2-light casements to gable ends. East stable yard-with single-storey ranges of stables and carriage houses, large blocked segmental-arches with planked doors and fanlights and 3-light leaded casements to west side. North and south ranges continue in use as stables; 12-pane sashes on outer south side, four hipped dormers with pivot-hung windows to outer north side, flat-headed louvre vents to roofs, cobbled yard, access from east end between tiled gate piers. Good example of Webb's use of local building materials and vernacular detail in estate building.
