STANTON
WYKEN ROAD
The Gables

II

House. Late C17. 2 storeys. Timber-framed, with framing exposed, plaintiled
roof with fluted barge-boards to gables. An internal chimney stack: the high
shaft, largely rebuilt, has recessed panels. A 2-storey stair wing protrudes
from front of house. C20 casement windows, and a rectangular bay window
extension to the upper storey of the south gable, with a pitched roof,
over an open base supported on posts. The framing is widely-spaced with a
middle rail and straight braces: some replacement studding. To the south of
stack, the original hall and service room have been thrown into one: chamfered
and stopped ceiling beam and joists, and an inner skin of false studding to
the walls. Roof with cambered collars, nailed to rafters, no principals, and
small ridge-piece. A sawn-off section of the front wall-plate indicates the
stair wing is an addition.
