Description

MARSH BALDON BALDON LANE
SU59NE (South side)
5/17 Causeway approx. 400m. W of
Baldon House

- II

Causeway retaining wall. Late C18. Limestone ashlar. The eastern face of the
causeway is retained by a stone wall in the form of a triple-arched bridge. The
arches, with projecting double-stepped keyblocks, are of graduated size and
shelter recesses, the central recess having a small opening through which water
issues. The wall rises towards the centre and curves outwards at its ends.
Probably intended to form the head of a small lake.
