14/71 Kildare Hotel

G.V. II

Hotel. Dated 1887 on lead rainwater heads. Red sandstone ashlar with string
course and cornice. Graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and ball
finials; ashlar chimney stacks. 3 storeys, 2 bays with cellar. Panelled door
under recessed segmental arch in round-headed surround with pilastered doorcase
and dentilled cornice. Console bracketed balcony above has decorative
wrought-iron railings under large French window. 2-storey canted bay window to
left with glazing bars. Decorative stonework parapet under 3-light gabled
dormer window with similar window to right. Was a private hotel until taken
over by the Central Control Board in 1916 and returned to private ownership in
1973. In a prominent position opposite the parish church and listed partly for
G.V. with that church.
