Church of St Michael, Moor Hospital
GV II
Marked on OS Map as St Saviour's Church.
Anglican chapel to the Moor Hospital (qv). c1867. Probably by
Edward Paley. Coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings
and slate roof. Comprises an aisleless nave, west porch, north
and south transepts, lower chancel with apsidal east
termination, north projection in the angle between transept
and chancel, with a similar vestry or chapel projection on the
south side under a pitched roof.
Neo-Norman style, with round-headed windows which have
alternating red and yellow sandstone voussoirs, a string
course below their sills, and iron glazing bars forming a
pattern of linked circles.
The central part of the west wall projects slightly and has a
gabled porch with a round-arched doorway with angle shafts.
Above are 3 round-arched roll-moulded lights under a
single-arch. The gable is coped with a cross finial. The nave
is of 5 bays separated by buttresses. Both transepts have a
rose window above 2 single light windows. The south projection
has a round-headed south doorway, and 2 windows facing east.
There are 3 pairs of round-headed apse windows.
INTERIOR: the nave is now reduced to 2 bays and has a wide
roof of arch-braced trusses (now strengthened with steel) with
king posts and raking struts above the collars. On each side
are 3 rows of purlins with windbraces to the lowest. Over the
transepts and crossing are similar trusses, with principals
rising diagonally to support a belfry. The jambs of the
chancel arch have three-quarter round mouldings. The arch has
an inner chamfered order carried on corbels and an outer order
matching that of the jambs.
