Hazelhanger Farm Barn
14/4/10005 II
Barn. Late C18 or early C19; altered later C19. TImber-framed
with weatherboarded cladding on red brick plinth in Flemish
bond. Half-hipped roof of corrugated iron, probably replacing
thatch, tile-roofed added lean-to. 5 bays with rear (north)
aisle and opposing central cart-entries, that at rear with
added hipped-roofed midstrey. Lean-to added against right
gable. Much of the original deep weather-boarding survives.
Replacement board cart door on wouth side. Wide entrance and
small window to lean-to. Left return has a 2-light window
(with replacement glazing) and 2 inserted openings in the
brick plinth. INTERIOR: the timber frame survives virtually
intact: aisle posts have brick plinths; posts have square-cut
or gunstock jowels and straight braces to plates and
tie-beams; raking wall struts; collared queen-post-roof
trusses with principal rafters, clasping diagonally-set
purlins; yoked plank ridge; original rafters, and on north
side, laths, some still with string attached, probably
indicating former use of thatch as roofing material.
