Description

ORMSKIRK

SD40NW COTTAGE LANE
663-1/4/147 (West side)
11/08/72 The Rookery

II

House. Probably early C19; altered. Pebble-dashed render on
brick, with cement dressings, sandstone ashlar porch and
hipped slate roof. Double-depth double-fronted plan with
shallow back extension. Tudor Gothick style. Two storeys and 3
windows, almost symmetrical, with a plinth, rusticated quoins,
1st-floor sillband, string-course and parapet. The ground
floor has a gabled porch offset right of centre (probably a
late C19 addition), large and clumsily proportioned, with a
Tudor-arched outer doorway flanked by narrow windows and a
high parapet with heavy kneelers and an apex upstand, and an
inner doorway with fluted pilasters, frieze, and a door with 2
arched glazed panels. All the windows are square 3-light
casements with arched lights, quoined surrounds and
hoodmoulds. Two chimney stacks with tall clustered octagonal
chimneys. The right-hand return wall has a large full-height
2-storey canted bay; the left return has a C20 bow at ground
floor; otherwise, the fenestration of the sides and rear is
similar to the front.
